Bags and Baggage

On display are:-

works of art dreamed up by our local artists on the subject of bags – handbags, suitcases, hat bags, carrier bags etc. The only essential was that bags must be the central theme of their work.

A large collection of bags and luggage of all sizes on view - many with interesting tales associated with them E.g. A genuine Gladstone bag—George Harrisons suitcase. A 1920’s celluloid suitcase etc.

Various bags belonging to local celebrities.

The Exhibition is open from Tuesday 2nd , to Thursday 18th February between 12am and 4pm Monday to Friday.

Some Views of the Exhibition

On the left is a picture of the DirectorJune Lornie with part of the exhibition, whilst on the right is a dress form the exhibition designed and made by June out of plastic bags used by Steranko in the Cheshire town of Daresbury.


Here we have two cardboard suitcases. The one on the left is a picture sent in by Frances Kasperski, a Liverpudlian now living in Ontario. Click on the image to see the photograph and read the tale that goes with the case.

On the right is a suitcase which belonged to George Harrison. It is made of compressed cardboard with plastic trim on the sides and back and was left behind at Irby Village Hall in 1962. It is initialled G.H. on the front with the name scrubbed out and has a label inside in blue ballpoint pen saying:- "Mr George Harrision c/o Beatles Party".

Also on display is a statement from Mary Newton who booked the venue along with receipt and payment slips and a letter of confirmation from NEMS office in Liverpool.


On the left is aTheatre Trunk bought by a New York actor from a Theatrical suppliers in New York in 1927.

This trunk must be an early example of celluloid being used for major items.

The trunk on the right was used by Sister Rose Gabriel, of the Poor Clares when they were in Woolton Road, Liverpool 16. It was used to transport personal items when they moved convents.

Two carpet bags from the 1930's which belonged to the mother of Monty Fagin - A well known tailor of distinction in Liverpool.


Various suitcases on loan with history of their travel and on the right the late Frank Hendry's portable paint box and easel.
