The Paintings of Charles Taylor, Walter Riley and Joe Thompson |
|
Thi exhibition is a fascinating collection of recent paintings from three artists who met whilst following a degree course as mature students at the Wirral Metropolitan College some seven years ago. They share similar ideals for their painting -A desire to transfer to the viewer the transcendent effect that the seemingly ordinary can have by simultaneously intensifying and abstracting from reality, and through the resulting transformation allow the viewer to share in their experience.
For Charles Taylor every subject has a way of provoking the imagination and intellect, when looked at in a certain way the contents of the subject change and feed the imagination. Through manipulation of colour, rhythm and space he feeds these changes back to the viewer.
For Walter Riley it is the woodlands and the wonderful earthy smells and beautiful bright soothing colours they generously provide that inspire him. He loves what he calls "Tranquil Disorder" -such as is found in a derelict building reclaimed by nature, or in the attic where, amongst the quiet clutter, one can indulge in reflective nostalgia.
For Joe Thompson it is by placing the familiar in a surreal situation together with the use of heightened colour and texture that he seeks to achieve the transcendent effect on the viewer. He is particularly drawn to surrealism - it creeps in even when he initially does not intend it to.
The exhibition will open Monday to Friday between 12 and 4.00 pm from Monday 1st until Thursday 12th April. For details on how to get there see How to Find Us
